Potty training can feel overwhelming—When do we start? How do we start? What do we actually need?

Potty training can feel overwhelming—When do we start? How do we start? What do we actually need?

Both times we trained our boys, we ended up starting on a complete whim. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime. But honestly, starting quickly helped us keep things simple. No overthinking, no giant list of “must-haves”—just the essentials that actually matter.

Here are the five things that made potty training easier, calmer, and more successful for us:

1. Oh Crap! Potty Training Book

If you’re going to read one guide, make it this one. It’s clear, realistic, and gives you a step-by-step plan you can actually follow without feeling overwhelmed.

2. Potty by Leslie Patricelli

I don’t know what it is about Leslie Patricelli books, but my kids love them. They are so simple but helped both of my kids understand what potty training is without pressure. It quickly becomes a favorite and sets the stage in a positive way.

3. Attached Potty Seat / Lid Combo

Game changer. It keeps things easy and eliminates the extra mess that comes with removable seats. Plus, kids love feeling like they’re using the “big” toilet and its not an eyesore in your bathroom.

4. BabyBjörn Potty Chair

Perfect for starting out and essential for traveling or keeping consistency in different rooms. It’s sturdy, small, and most importantly, easy to clean.

5. Visible Treat Dispenser

You could keep it simple with just a Ziploc bag, but if you want to make it more fun a Keep visible dispenser gives your child a clear connection between effort and reward. We stuck with M&Ms (or as my boys like to call them “nums”) which were colorful, small, and motivating.
