5 Essential Winter Toys for Indoor Days

Simple, engaging toys that make long winter days easier for everyone.

Being stuck inside with little ones is hard. The days feel long, the energy gets high, and the boredom sets in fast. But having the right toys—ones that actually hold attention and spark creativity—can completely change the rhythm of your day.

These are the five essential indoor toys that kept (and still keep) my boys entertained, active, and happy during those long winter stretches. Each one earns its spot by being engaging, durable, and clutter-free.

1. National Geographic Art Kit

I was actually surprised by how much this kit comes with, and my kids loved having options to choose from. Just a quick heads up: a few of the projects require some time in between steps. For example, the clay pieces need to dry overnight before you can paint them. It’s still such a fun, low-prep activity—just something to know before you start!

2. Fort-Building Set

A total imagination booster. Forts keep little ones busy for long stretches, whether they’re building castles, reading nooks, or rocket ships. It’s one of those toys that grows with them and never gets old. My kids love to set it up for a fun and cozy movie night!

3. Nex Playground Console

When kids need to move—but can’t go outside—this is a lifesaver. It keeps them active, engaged, and entertained in a way that doesn’t feel like screen time. It’s an investment, but worth it- especially when the whole family can play at once! (Fruit Ninja and Soccer are some of our favorites).

4. Easy Pop-Up Tent

Instant pretend play without any effort (Don’t let all the accessories scare you). Whether they’re playing camping, reading inside, or hiding with toys, a pop-up tent give kids a cozy spot to escape to (and give you a little break). I bought this on a whim and it’s been one of our most well loved toys. What I like most about this in comparison to others is that kids can set it up themselves with the pop up feature.

5. Magna-Tiles

The ultimate classic for a reason. They encourage creativity, problem-solving, and focused play. And they work for every age—toddlers to big kids. I’ve been so impressed by the things my kids have built. This one is well worth the investment.
